Undercurrent X

Undercurrent X - Original abstract drawing in archival pigment ink on heavyweight 300GSM paper. Part of the Undercurrent series. The form cascades diagonally from the upper left corner, filling more than two-thirds of the composition with voluminous, deeply folded lobes. A strong central vein runs the length of the form, from which alternating lobes billow outward - some curling tightly inward, others expanding into broad, rounded masses. The line work is confident and flowing, with long contour strokes sweeping from the central vein outward to the ruffled edges, creating a powerful sense of radial growth. The lobes at the top of the composition are more pointed and compact, while those toward the bottom swell into heavier, more expansive forms, giving the whole figure a sense of increasing weight as it descends. This is among the most recognisably botanical works in the series - the central vein, the alternating lobes, and the ruffled margins evoke the architecture of a tropical leaf or a massive kelp blade more directly than any of the other pieces.
