Undercurrent V

Undercurrent V - Original abstract drawing in archival pigment ink on heavyweight 300GSM paper. Part of the Undercurrent series. A cascading chain of small, tightly clustered forms tumbles diagonally from the upper left corner to the lower right, tracing a sinuous path across the page. Unlike the broader, more voluminous forms elsewhere in the series, these are compact and numerous - dozens of individual lobes, each one swelling briefly before cinching into its neighbour, like a string of beads made from soft tissue. The forms billow outward in alternating directions as the chain descends, creating a rhythmic oscillation: left, right, left, right, each cluster slightly different in size and orientation from the last. The line work is fine and tightly controlled, with the contour strokes compressing into dark seams at every junction and fanning out across the rounded crests. The overall effect is of something both singular and serial - one continuous organism made up of repeating units, or one continuous thought made up of repeating impulses. The chain has no clear beginning or end; it enters and exits the composition as though the page is a window onto something much longer.
