Undercurrent II - Original abstract drawing in archival pigment ink on heavyweight 300GSM paper. Part of the Undercurrent series. A single, sinuous form twists diagonally across the composition, descending from the upper left to the lower right. A taut central spine runs the length of the figure, while its edges erupt into elaborate ruffled folds that billow outward on both sides - expanding, curling back on themselves, and compressing again in rhythmic succession. The contour lines follow every undulation with precise fidelity, tightening into deep creases where the folds collapse inward and sweeping wide across the fullest crests. The form appears to be simultaneously rotating along its own axis and yielding to an external force, creating a double movement: torsion from within, drift from without.Where Undercurrent suggested descent and submersion, this work captures something mid-passage - a form in active transit, twisting through a medium that resists and shapes it in equal measure. The ruffled edges recall the lateral membranes of a nudibranch, the frilled margin of a cuttlefish fin, or the undulating blade of a bull kelp frond pushed broadside by a current. But they also read as the elaborate convolutions of white matter tracts - those bundled neural fibres that carry signals between distant regions of the brain, twisting and folding to fit within the confines of the skull.
